What is hot seating?
Hot seating allows participants to talk to the character that they have already seen in action in a forum scenario. It gives the opportunity to look at the attitudes and beliefs of the character to try to understand why they behave how they do. It often provides vital insights into why the character is behaving in a certain way. They may also find that they can see some of their own traits in the character and can understand the challenges of the situation more clearly.
Hot seating works well where changes of attitudes and beliefs are needed to make positive change. Imagine how powerful this could be in a leadership training setting, where the managers themselves get to interview their staff, played by actors, and find out how they truly feel as a consequence of that leaders’ actions?
